The new BTEC qualifications in ESports are skills-focused and are a major step forward in supporting the creation of long-term careers in the growing ESports industry both in the UK and internationally.
The ESports industry is projected to generate revenues of $1.1 billion in 2020, a year-on-year growth of 16%, with the total ESports audience set to rise 11.7% to 495 million individuals.
What will I learn?
The new Level 2 ESports qualification consists of units, including enterprise and entrepreneurship, strategy and analysis, events management, live-streamed broadcasting, video production, shoutcasting, coaching, health and wellbeing, the law and legislation, computer networking and more. The qualifications will enable some learners to enter careers in the esports industry and for others it will offer an opportunity to upskill and progress their careers.
The units are designed to provide deep insight into ESports and may be adjusted to update content and to reflect variations within the industry internationally and in the future. Learners will develop a wide range of transferable skills and knowledge that can be applied to other careers and sectors including digital and STEAM-based careers. This is especially valuable to learners in a changing world where job roles are likely to continually change and the emphasis is increasingly on flexibility, adaptability and transferable skills.
The world of esports offers huge employment potential, both in the UK and across the world, and these new BTEC qualifications will give learners the knowledge and skills they need to build a career in this exciting sector. Pearsons have worked closely with industry experts to create a career-focused set of qualifications that will support the rapid growth of the esports sector and offer learners a pathway into working in esports and related industries.
The BTEC in esports really addresses the core competencies needed for students to become empowered and confident young professionals in the gaming and esports industries. To meet students where they are and teach highly transferable and valuable emerging, new and digital media skills in an engaging way is the future.
The qualification is endorsed by The British ESports Association as being suitable for learners wanting to work in this industry. This means that it will be recognised by employers in a range of roles. Successful completion of this qualification could also lead to being fully prepared to progress to an apprenticeship in the related sector, for example, in events, digital marketing or creative media for example.
This course is a full-time study programme and has been formulated to prepare you for the future. This means as well as studying your chosen course, you'll also work on important skills to help to equip you for your future career. Your study programme will include: Your chosen course, English & Maths and/or subject related IT sessions (Digital Skills), a 45 day subject related work placement (Industry Placement), personal development sessions (Tutorials) and independent study sessions (Directed Study).

How will I be assessed?
There will be a variety of practical and written assessments, each unit is individually graded Pass, Merit or Distinction with an overall grade given at the end.
A minimum of 4 GCSEs at 3 (D) or above, which need to include English and Maths. Alternatively a level 1 Diploma in Business plus Level 1 Functional skills in English and Maths.
Progression & Career Opportunities
Learners taking this qualification may also want to progress to further study such as Pearson BTEC Level 3 Nationals in ESports, Information Technology, Creative Media, Sport, Enterprise and Entrepreneurship or Business. Successful completion of this qualification could also lead to being fully prepared to progress to an apprenticeship in the related sector, for example, in events, digital marketing or creative media for example.
The qualification is aimed at learners who are looking to progress to further education. It offers learners the opportunity to study ESports alongside a broad range of L2 qualifications, such as English, Mathematics, media, IT, sports, business or enterprise. The qualification is endorsed by The British ESports Association as being suitable for learners as an introduction to ESports.
