An intermediate, or level 2 apprenticeship, is the first level of the modern apprenticeship. Intermediate apprentices work full-time with an employer, and spend time studying towards qualifications at a college or training provider.

Intermediate apprenticeships are designed to train a school leaver for work. There is a focus on imparting key employability skills, as well as more specific training for a job within a company.

  • What will I learn?

The occupation involves carrying out skilled work, primarily using timber products, either on a construction site, or in a workshop, creating and installing building components. This is a core and options apprenticeship, with two pathways:

Pathway 1: A Site Carpenter will normally work on a building site, or in domestic and commercial premises, preparing and fixing building components, from the initial erection of a new building, through to the installation of all necessary fixtures and fittings, as well as a range of repair and maintenance activities.

Pathway 2: An Architectural Joiner will normally be employed in a workshop producing timber based building components and other architectural products, such as doors, windows, units and staircases, which are then transported to construction sites to be installed by site carpenters.

  • How will I be assessed?

Apprentices will be supported in the workplace by a qualified and competent assessor/trainer. All students must complete 20% off-the-job training through a range of learning methods including day release. There will be an End Point Assessment which will include skills test, knowledge test and oral questions.

  • Entry Requirements

Apprentices must complete, or have previously completed recognised English and Mathematics Level 1 qualifications and aspire to achieve English and Mathematics Level 2 qualifications during the apprenticeship.

  • Progression & Career Opportunities

On completion of this standard, some apprentices may progress onto the Advanced Apprenticeship Standard in Carpentry and Joinery, or secure employment as a Site Carpenter or Architectural Joiner.

The achievement of this standard will meet the requirements of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Skilled Worker standard, which is widely accepted in the sector as a licence to operate in a skilled construction trade.

  • Cost of Study

All course fees associated with Apprenticeships are paid by the employer. If your employer pays into the Apprenticeship Levy your fees will be paid through this process. If your employer is not a levy paying employer then training for 16 18 year old learners is free and the training is subsidised for Apprentices over 19 years old. Course fees paid by the employer will vary but are likely to be in the region of £300 £1200 depending on the qualification.

  • Additional Information

All apprentices must be employed in a relevant area to their apprenticeship. Apprenticeships are mostly delivered in the workplace. Some qualifications involve classroom delivery and this can take place at College or on employer premises. The College offers a range of day release, block release and 1:1 tuition options to suit the needs of employers and Apprentices alike. Your assessor, who will support you through your apprenticeship, will visit you in the workplace every 4 6 weeks.

Once you have completed your online application you will receive an invite to interview. Once you have received an offer you will be invited to attend an induction session at the College which will be followed up with a visit with your employer. When your enrolment has been completed, your delivery and assessment can commence.
