This is a highly creative course with a technical element, for students with a keen interest in 3D modelling, digital sculpting, 3D animation, digital compositing and movie style visual effects sequences.
What will I learn?
You will be able to take advantage of our state-of-the art motion capture studio provided by Centroid, our TV studios which include green screens and our dedicated VFX & Animation Lab which includes a render-farm. We also have up-to-date industry standard software including Z-Brush, Maya, NUKE, Mari, MotionBuilder and more. How will I be assessed?
The course is 70% portfolio assessed with the remainder done through written work and presentations. Your portfolio will consist of a series of short sequences, life drawings and images which will ultimately take the form of a showreel. Your written and presented work will allow you to explore the industry and underpinning concepts.
You must be 18 years old or over and have a full Level 3 qualification (BTEC Extended /National Diploma or A-Level), or at least 1 year of relevant work experience. Drawing skills are essential for all students. In all cases we will require to see a portfolio of drawn and/ or digital artwork. You must also have a grade C in GCSE Maths and English.
Progression & Career Opportunities
1 year BA top up animation courses at university. Most of the skills taught are also used in the games design industry and students can progress in this direction. The net result of this course, if completed and passed successfully, would be a strong valuable skill set of interest to most VFX and Game production companies. - Lee Medcalf, Independent Industry Reviewer. It is highly advantageous to have your own computer and the Course Leader will be happy to advise you on what would be suitable for the course. You will also need an external hard drive of at least 1TB, a graphics tablet and materials for life drawing.
