The purpose of this qualification is to assess the competence and underpinning knowledge of individuals working in the role of a Grip.
The Level 2 Diploma in Professional Competence for Grips is designed to enable candidates to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary in this highly specialised area, supporting their progression into and through this particular sub-sector of the film and TV industry.
The qualification has been designed in collaboration with ScreenSkills and industry representatives. It is based on the National Occupational Standards developed by the industry to support their training needs. The qualifications are not used as a licence to practice, but employers and practitioners support the formal recognition of the demonstration of competence in the workplace in the interests of health and safety.
The administrative centre for the qualification is the Amersham campus but all work required for the qualification, and all assessments take place in your usual working environment (in studio or on location). There is no requirement to attend Amersham campus at any time.
What will I learn?
There are 7 units to complete, each unit listed below describes what you must be able to demonstrate and competently achieve on production. Being competent means that you can do a task to a skilled level, understand why it is done that way and solve associated problems.

How will I be assessed?
Upon acceptance to the qualification, you will be allocated a qualified assessor who is also a Level 3 qualified working grip. Three work-based assessments will be carried out to assess all units of the qualification. You will also be required to write up log-books and provide photographic evidence of work undertaken in each unit area. The qualification is expected to take approximately 12 months to complete.
Grips must have at least 2-years experience working as a grip in the film and TV industry and have excellent up-to-date knowledge of all camera-support equipment in order to apply for the Level 2 qualification.
Due to the health and safety critical nature of the role applicants are expected to have great awareness in this area.
Applicants are also expected to have good leadership skills, initiative and the ability to respond quickly to different situations, ability to help realise a directors artistic vision in practical terms, ability to collaborate and to work as part of a team, diplomacy and sensitivity when working with artists and other crew, and a level of physical stamina and strength to enable lifting and pulling of heavy equipment.
You will need to be able to provide 5 references in total. 4 from qualified level 3 grips they have worked with and 1 camera operator reference. This will form part of the interview process. Progression & Career Opportunities
Level 3 Diploma in Professional Competence for Advanced Grips As this qualification is certification in the workplace the candidates will already be immersed as Grip within the film/TV industry.
This qualification is supported by ScreenSkills.
Grips should be in possession of a clean driving license.
A health and safety certification is desirable but not essential.
Where a candidate is in full time employment with an employer then the employer will be expected to sponsor the candidate through the full cost of the qualification. Details of this will be made available upon application.
