The UAL Level 1 Diploma in Games Design is an Art based course that has been designed to provide students with an introduction to the creative Gaming sector.
This will then enable them to make informed progression choices while developing, growing and applying their art knowledge, and acquiring a range of relevant practical, communication and personal development skills.
What will I learn?
This qualification is suitable for students who have an interest in art, design, animation media or a related game lead subject and wish to explore this interest via a full-time, immersive learning experience.
Students will develop and test their creativity within a structure that will provide a sound foundation of art skills and knowledge, while enhancing self-confidence and revealing the potential career demands and opportunities within the sector.

Introduction to communication skills in Game art, design and media
Traditional Art based 2D creative problem solving
Traditional Art based 3D creative problem solving

How will I be assessed?
The University of the Arts London (UAL) Level 1 Diploma Art, Design & Media; Games Design, is assessed through a series of projects that are designed to broaden student skills, experience and expertise. In your first year, the first 7 units are delivered with a Pass or Fail outcome. A final project (The FMP) decides the students overall grade for the year which is graded at: Pass, Merit or Distinction.
Minimum of Entry Level 3 literacy. No previous qualifications are required for this course, but a love of art and drawing is a must.
Progression & Career Opportunities
Progression onto a Level 2 qualification such as the Level 2 Diploma Games Design. Level 2 courses provide a transferrable art based skills for preparation for working within the creative media industries. Successful completion will provide access to a wide range of creative level 2 courses.
Career Opportunities include: Games Designer, Games Developer, Graphic Designer, Concept Artist and Animator.
A portfolio of creative work must be brought to interview
A studio fee to pay for materials is required, a bursary is available to help with costs if required. We strive to support our student learning through termly trips, these will be charged per trip, bursary is available to support where needed.
Your course will be timetabled over 3 or 4 days, with approximately 6-12 hours work of directed homework per week depending on the level of course. Our days run from 9am to 4.45pm.
Your study programme include your vocational course and also Maths, English, Digital Skills, Tutorial and Career Progression sessions, attendance to all aspects is mandatory.
