Students from Buckinghamshire College Group experienced an unforgettable hands‑on learning opportunity last week as they took part in a full-scale Major Incident Simulation held at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre.
The large‑scale exercise was delivered in collaboration with local emergency services, with teams from the ambulance, fire and police departments on site to lead the first run‑through of the scenario. Their demonstration gave students a unique insight into how professionals respond during high‑pressure incidents, offering valuable continuing professional development for the emergency services involved while setting the scene for a dynamic and immersive day of learning.
Learners from both the Aylesbury and Wycombe campuses took part, representing a broad range of courses including Public Services, Healthcare, Forensic Science and Special Effects Make‑up. The event highlighted the power of cross‑course collaboration, bringing together students with different skills, interests and specialisms to work as one team in a realistic emergency environment.
After observing the initial response from emergency personnel, Public Services students took over the operation, splitting into teams to assess the situation, manage the scene and coordinate their own response plans. Their professionalism and teamwork were praised throughout the day.
Meanwhile, many of our students fully embraced their roles as casualties, complete with expertly applied Special Effects Make‑up, to help create believable medical scenarios. This provided Healthcare students with an invaluable opportunity to carry out triage assessments and practise treatment techniques, all under simulated emergency conditions.
Our Forensic Science students then entered the scene once it was made safe, carefully examining, logging and collecting evidence in line with professional forensic procedures. This experience allowed them to apply theory from the classroom directly into practical, real‑world investigation work.
The day was a resounding success, offering students an authentic insight into the challenges faced by emergency responders and investigative teams. It also demonstrated the strength of collaboration, both between our courses and with our external partners.
A huge thank you to Buckinghamshire Railway Centre for hosting the event, and to the ambulance, fire and police services for their support, expertise and enthusiasm throughout the day.
Most importantly, we are incredibly proud of our students, who demonstrated professionalism, teamwork and commitment from start to finish.
