Graphic Design learners recently welcomed Tim from Davies Leslie-Smith, a graphic design consultancy specialising in branding, packaging and visual identity, for an engaging and insightful industry-focused session.
Tim delivered a presentation to first and second-year learners, providing a valuable overview of the creative sector and sharing examples of work produced for a range of well-known brands. Learners gained an insight into the consultancy's approach to branding and design, with Tim showcasing projects for clients including Lidl, Superdrug and Darling Spuds.
As part of his visit, Tim also generously donated a collection of D&AD books to the Graphics department. The books will serve as a valuable resource for learners, offering inspiration and industry-standard examples to support future coursework and creative projects.
Following the presentation, learners had the opportunity to meet with Tim individually to discuss their own work. During these one-to-one portfolio reviews, he provided constructive feedback on current projects, helping learners refine their ideas and further develop their creative skills. The personalised advice offered learners a unique opportunity to gain professional insight into the standards and expectations of the design industry.
Tim also shared practical guidance on pursuing a career within the creative sector, discussing the importance of building a strong portfolio, applying for internships and work experience opportunities, and understanding what employers look for when recruiting emerging talent. His advice gave learners a clearer understanding of the different pathways available within the industry and the steps they can take to enhance their employability.
Industry visits such as this play an important role in helping learners bridge the gap between education and employment. By hearing directly from experienced professionals, students gain a deeper understanding of the creative industries, receive valuable feedback on their work and develop a greater awareness of potential career opportunities.
A huge thank you to Tim and the team at Davies Leslie-Smith for taking the time to visit our learners and for supporting the next generation of creative talent. His expertise, encouragement and generosity made for an inspiring and highly beneficial experience for everyone involved.
