Our Special Effects Makeup students recently swapped the classroom for the great outdoors as they embarked on an exciting educational trip to Whipsnade Zoo.

The visit, designed to support their studies in creature design and prosthetic development, offered students a unique opportunity to observe a wide range of animals up close. From the subtle textures of reptile scales to the powerful muscles structure of big cats, the zoo’s diverse inhabitants provided rich inspiration for their future major projects.

The trip to Whipsnade is an essential part of the curriculum. It allows students to study animal anatomy, movement, and skin detailing in a way that isn’t possible through textbooks or screens. Armed with sketchbooks, cameras, and plenty of enthusiasm, students spent the day documenting animal features and behaviours, which they will use to inform the design and creation of lifelike prosthetics back in the workshop.

The Whipsnade trip is just one of several industry-related experiences offered to students on the Special Effects course, which prepares learners for careers in film, TV and theatre by combining practical skills with professional insight.
