    Students must be 19 or older at the start of the academic year. An initial assessment to determine the appropriate study pathway.

  • What will I learn?

    Functional Skills: This 16-week practical course focuses on developing everyday and work-related English skills, progressing through various levels from Entry 1 to Level 1. Reading: Understand texts in depth, utilise information effectively, and identify appropriate responses. Writing: Learn to write clearly and concisely, organise information logically, and use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Speaking and Listening: Build communication skills to speak confidently in both formal and informal settings, and present ideas effectively.

    GCSE: Delve into a wide array of fiction and non-fiction texts, enhancing your critical reading and writing abilities over a 32-week period. Reading: Analyse language use, evaluate techniques, and compare texts critically. Writing: Develop creative non-fiction and fiction writing skills, utilising a rich vocabulary and varied language features. These skills are transferable to all aspects of life, helping you communicate confidently and effectively. You will be assessed on reading comprehension, analytical comparisons, and clear, imaginative writing. Tasks include understanding diverse texts, producing creative work, and participating in group discussions. You will also gain practical employability skills such as formal writing and presentation creation.

    All prospective students aged 19 and over are required to undergo an initial assessment to tailor the learning pathway to your needs.
  • How am I assessed?

    Functional Skills: Assessments include a verbal controlled assessment and two formal exams in reading and writing. These take place during lessons and can be retaken if necessary. Successfully passing all assessments will earn you a functional skills qualification at your level of study.

    GCSE: The course concludes with two formal exams in June.
